I stood alone at the entrance to the strange little park, looking first down on side of the street and then the other, waiting for my date to arrive. He took so long that I was beginning to think I’d been stood up, just as he told me he had been. He had told me that that was the reason he wanted me to come to him; that he had gone to various lengths to meet people in the past, only to be stood up once he arrived.

How ironic would it have been if that were what he was doing to me right now?

But the hand on my shoulder cleared my mind of any such concerns. I jumped a little as I turned to look at him, but was comforted to see the same attractive young man I’d spoken to earlier.

“Sorry,” he said, “didn’t mean to scare you.”

“No, that’s fine,” I said, “I’m glad you’re here.”

“I’m glad you could make it.”

“Yeah, it was no problem.”

“I thought it’d be best to meet here, since it’s kind of a landmark.”

“Right, yeah,” I said, “I actually went inside for a few minutes.”

“Really?” he said, turning subtly to start us walking away from the park. I fell into step beside him as I explained.

“Yeah, I just went in for a minute or two. I thought I saw something in there though, so I came back out.”

“That’s good,” he said, “you probably shouldn’t have done that. There’s been some problem with animals in the neighborhood.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, it’s not very safe.”

“Well, where do you think we should go then?”

“We could go back to my place,” he said, not hiding any of the implications in his eyes as he said it. I smiled for a moment and then said, “Okay.”

He led me down the street to a rustic little building with a freight elevator inside it. By the time we were in the building, down the hall, and inside the freight elevator, with those jaw-like bars sliding up and down and sealing us inside, I was beginning to think that I’d made a terrible mistake.
